Many parents believe that being taught values at such a young age is pointless – this couldn’t be further from the truth! One thing we are always told is that a child’s mind is like a sponge, so make the most of it and teach them these easy-to-stick-to values by their fifth birthday!
The best way to encourage truthfulness in your child? Be truthful yourself of course. Your child looks up to you for guidance, so be a good role model! Never encourage lying, deceit, and make sure you appear truthful in front of other parents.
Insist that children make amends! If a dilemma occurs with your child (whether it is between family or friends), make sure you get them to apologise first. To enhance the learning experience even further, ask your child why he/she acted in that way, express understanding, and explain where they went wrong!
The easiest way to encourage determination at such a young age is to avoid excessive praise. Provide your child with honest and constructive feedback in a gentle and supportive fashion. By all means give words of encouragement, but in a tactical way. For example, if you know your child has trouble in a particular area (such as socialising), congratulate them when they overcome this fear!
Teach your child to think about others’ feelings! Find an opportunity where you can show them the importance of thinking about others, and make an effort to show them how teamwork comes through in any situation!
Parents tend to think that children are naturally loving and generous. While this may be true, in order for this affection to last it needs to be reciprocated! Don’t be afraid to let your kids know how much you care about them as well as everyone else in the family and your own friends!
