Are you looking to send your child to an English Schools Foundation (ESF) primary school in Hong Kong, but are unsure of which options are available? a) Quarry Bay School 一、鰂魚涌小學
Quarry Bay School is the oldest ESF primary school in Hong Kong, and currently caters for approximately 720 students. The juvenile hall was opened in 1926 to educate the children of expatriate dockyard workers, and the school is located on Braemar Hill. For secondary school, a majority of students move on to South Island School (SIS), with West Island School (WIS) being the next destination, followed by Island School (IS).
b) Bradbury School 二、白普理英文小學
This ESF primary school is located on Stubbs Road, connecting Happy Valley with The Peak in Hong Kong. When a place becomes available in the appropriate year group, an interview will be arranged for the child on the top of the waiting list. Students are encouraged to become independent thinkers who are curious about the world around them and who develop the skills to become learners and leaders.
c) Peak School 三、山頂小學
Located on Victoria Peak, Peak School opened in 1911 and offers the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students. Multiple notable alumni have come from Peak School over the years, such as Martin Booth (British novelist and poet), Marie Chantal (Crown Princess of Greece), and Sir Denis Wright (British diplomat).

d) Glenealy School 四、己連拿小學
Established in 1959, Glenealy School is located in Mid Levels in Hong Kong, and provides 360 places for children that reside within the surrounding residential area. The school offers its students the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), in addition to a wide variety of sports. These include field hockey, tag rugby, archery, rounders, kayaking, surfing, and several more. Some notable former students include Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.
e) Sha Tin Junior School 五、沙田小學
This primary school operates in Fo Tan, Sha Tin, and was established in 1988. It now has a 5-class entry for each year group with a total of approximately 900 students. Facilities include a swimming pool, multi-purpose sports hall, and an astro-turf pitch. All of these facilities are shared with Sha Tin College, the ESF secondary education service provider in Sha Tin (where students commonly attend after their years at Sha Tin Junior School). Students undertake the IBPYP programme, and are exposed to the idea of “House Spirit” early by being a part of one of four house groups.
f) Kennedy School 六、堅尼地小學
KS occupies a location on the west of Hong Kong Island, and benefits from the use of the swimming and sporting facilities of The University of Hong Kong’s Stanley Ho Centre, which is adjacent to the school. Music, performing arts and physical education are strengths of the school. A strong interest in environmental and ecological issues is also a feature. A high quality, modern, liberal education based on the PYP with links to the English National Curriculum is offered, and daily Mandarin lessons are provided for all students to ensure a rich and varied extra-curricular programme.
g) Beacon Hill School 七、畢架山小學
Located near Beacon Hill in Kowloon Tong and established in 1967, Beacon Hill School is one of the founding schools of the ESF in Hong Kong. With money raised at the International Food Fair, Beacon Hill gets a renovation every summer and new facilities are installed. Classrooms have a view of Lion Rock and Beacon Hill. Students can enjoy a wide range of facilities such as drama rooms, music rooms, interactive whiteboards, various clubs (rugby club, choir club, drama club, aquathon club, etc.), and annual expressive art performances. Students from Beacon Hill tend to continue their secondary education in KGV or Sha Tin College depending on their residential address.
h) Kowloon Junior School 八、九龍小學
KJS is a large five-form entry school with 900 students. Recently renovated buildings provides students with learning spaces including a gym, media suite and dance studio. Students and teachers are currently working on a project to redevelop the outside spaces, as an attempt to learn and connect with nature. KJS works within the PYP framework, and students commonly progress to KGV to undertake their secondary education.
i) Discovery College 九、智新書院
Discovery College is the only institution offering both primary and secondary education together on one purpose-built site. The school opened in August 2008, replacing a former ESF school known as Bauhinia School. Discovery College has five houses, and provides education from year 1 to year 13. Discovery College was established by the ESF with the intentions of serving the needs of the local and expatriate communities in Hong Kong. It is a full Years 1 to 13 school offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) for Years 1-6, Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Years 7-11, and Diploma Programme (DP) for Years 12-13. As a Private Independent School, Discovery College has no catchment area in its admission policy and students from all over Hong Kong can apply to study.
j) Clearwater Bay School 十、清水灣小學
Located on Clearwater Bay Road in the New Territories, CWBS boasts creating a safe, welcoming learning environment that fosters care, respect and intercultural understanding. The school prides itself on its international student population, having students and families who come from a total of more than 35 different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP), high standards of academic achievement are met. Additionally, this is combined with a strong emphasis on the arts, physical education and sport in order to give students a comprehensive, well rounded learning experience.
